"The boisterous sea of liberty indeed is never without a wave…"
—Thomas Jefferson to the Marquis de Lafayette, Dec. 26, 1820
Like Jefferson, we understand that the Sea of Liberty can be boisterous, but that doesn’t mean anything goes. Account holders should follow these guidelines at all times:
- Be polite. Please treat others with the same respect you would like to receive.
- Be accurate. If you are making a point, be sure you can back it up. That’s part of what being a historian is all about.
- Be yourself. If we discover you are pretending to be someone else, we will suspend your account.
- Be honest. If you post an image, video, or music, be sure it is in the public domain (not under copyright); otherwise you may be stealing someone else’s work.
The Thomas Jefferson Foundation will remove any posting that violates good standards. This includes, but is not limited to, postings that are vulgar, obscene, illegal, fraudulent, abusive, or may cause harm to someone physically or emotionally; postings that may encourage criminal behavior; or postings of a commercial nature. If you violate these standards, we will suspend your account.
